The People of Colors: Chapter 3 continued April 14, 2009

I have no idea how long I slept. I don’t really care either. When I finally did wake up (at least as far as I wanted to admit) my head pain had finally eased off, but I was still rather groggy. Even so I figured it was time to get ready. Maybe if I was sleepy enough I wouldn’t care what Green did.

I took my time to change into a fresh costume, roll up my sleeping mat, and grab my belongings bag. Since I kept most everything but my reading in my bag (unlike others I knew), after I rolled and tied my sleeping mat, all I had to do was grab my belongings bag and I was ready to go most anywhere, well, as ready as I was ever going to be.

I took a deep breath and sighed. Might as well start this travel, and with that I made my way towards Wisdom Kimley’s hut.

As I neared Wisdom Kimley’s hut Potley came running from the food tent, his arms loaded with food sacks. “Sema! There you are! You’re late you know.” “I am?” I gave a half-hearted attempt to put some surprise in my voice. I’m not surprised he didn’t believe me. “Come on Sema, don’t be like that. It’s going to be fun.” “You do know Green’s coming too, don’t you?” Part of me hoped to make Potley just as gloomy about all this as I was, but another part hoped he stayed hopeful and excited. “Of course I know. Sema, why do you dislike him so much?”

The People of Colors: Chapter 3 – The Journey April 10, 2009

Ugh! I never wanted to see another reading again in my life! Visions of the huge, leather-bound blocks of paper were swimming through my mind. I wanted to sleep! I so desperately wanted to sleep, but I knew the writings I had stared at for the last three days would fill my sleep stories and leave me with a head pain the next day.

I stumbled to my hut in the dark and flung the door open. I hadn’t even bothered locking it when I had left that morning. I threw myself in the direction of my sleeping mat. I didn’t even want to expend the energy to light a light pot or change my costume to my sleep clothes.

Fitful sleep would have found me so quickly if it weren’t for the knocking sound I heard on my hut door. I didn’t move. I hoped that I had just imagined the sound, but it came again. I still didn’t move, but I gave a low groan.

Once again the knock came, but this time it was accompanied by a voice. “Sema? Are you there?” Although it was quiet I could still recognize Green’s voice. I desperately tried to ignore him. Of all the people in the camp that I did not want to talk to right then, he was on the top of my list.

“The Colored” Changed to “The People of Colors” April 6, 2009

I’ve changed the name of my story “The Colored” to “The People of Colors.” I changed it for a couple reasons. 1) So it’s a little more obvious what the story is about, 2) to avoid something politically charged. You can probably guess what I mean by that.

I was considering changing it to “The Race of Colors,” but obviously this story isn’t about a race, like a car race or anything like that, it’s about a race of people. I think the new name is much better.

Woohoo! I now have a CafePress shop for my Vacancy Comics! It only has one item (a cute little kids shirt), but it’s a start, and it’s really cute. I’ll be adding more stuff later.

Check it out – http://www.cafepress.com/vacancycomics

I’m also considering opening an Etsy shop (probably not associated with Vacancy Comics) before too long (I hope).

Okay, so you might (or might not) know about my Vacancy Comics (at VacancyComics.com), but I’m also working on a new comic strip called Fruit Salad Agency. The main character is Agent Ambrosia, and I just made a chibi version of her! I put it on deviantArt if you’d like to take a look – http://sindy-chan.deviantart.com/art/Chibi-Ambrosia-116424681. I think it turned out pretty cute.

I also put it on my facebook profile. I had recently gotten an account and was needing a profile picture, but I’m not that much of a photographer (even when I am, I don’t tend to photograph myself). A few people suggested I put up a piece of my artwork. I had just barely drawn up my Chibi Ambrosia, and since I had modeled her mostly after myself, it was perfect. Yep, it worked pretty good and I got a few great comments on it.

I am now on deviantArt! I even have a couple of things on there – a drawing, and a poem. Go ahead and check it out at sindy-chan.deviantart.com!

What’s a Mektle? November 20, 2008

As mentioned in chapter 1, a mektle is an animal, but what kind of animal? What does it look like? And other questions some of you couldn’t care less about.

A mektle is a small furry animal whose adults look like pigmy deer fawn (aka, a mini baby deer). It has short stubby legs and large roundish ears compared with the rest of its body. The coloring of its fur is a strange combination of spots and stripes in various hues of brown, gold, and white depending on the genus.

Some mektles live in hot plains areas, but most live in misty forested areas. They are herbivores with their favorite foods including nettles, cacti, and other prickly foods. Perhaps they like the feel on their tongues. I certainly wouldn’t.

So for the most part, they are rather cute and fun, and as the chapter says – they’re spotted.

Hello Again! November 20, 2008

Drat! I hadn’t realized that it had been nearly a year since I posted here. Part of the problem was that I had forgotten my password (thank goodness for the password reminder feature) and I had put off trying to get it again. Apparently I put it off much longer than I thought.

But I’m back again. My sister found this here blog a couple days ago, and that’s what finally prompted me to get back to it. She was very dismayed that I hadn’t finished The Colored story (plus she mentioned that it needed some editing). So here I am again with more of the story rattling around in my brain ready to come out.

Sadly I won’t be coming back full force. I still have my job and other regular things going on like housekeeping that needs to be done, plus I have some freelance and commission work to get done (sorry, I’m getting paid to get them done :) ) So I will be getting to this as I can, but don’t worry, the story (and my sister ;) ) won’t let me stay away.

What is Hot Meggle? January 7, 2008

Some of you may have noticed that chapter 2 mentions something called Hot Meggle. What is it?

Hot Meggle is a hot drink similar to hot cider or hot wassail. It’s made of a certain fruit called a Meggle that grows on a bush. The fruit Meggle is about the size of a small tennis ball and about the same shade of green too, but the skin is smooth and kind of tough like a thick skinned pear. Even the meat is kind of tough and may seem too dry and unripe to those unfamiliar to it. The fruit is very round and many a child has played with it like a ball (much to the chagrin of their parents since it gets bruised that way).

Hot Meggle is prepared like a tea by steeping the cut up fruit in hot water. But unlike tea, when it is done steeping select spices and other flavoring are added. Sometimes fresh berries or other fruit is added for flavor and garnish.

“Well hello!” I turned around to find Wisdom Kimley standing behind me holding a small clay pouring pot. All this confusion was making me dizzy and disoriented.

“Good evening Wisdom Kimley.” Potley rescued me when I couldn’t seem to organize my thoughts quickly enough. “Good evening. I’m glad to see you two are all right. How can I help you?” Her voice was so nice and soothing. She was one of my favorite Wisdoms here at the training camp.

“Um, this.” I felt awkward and stupid as I shoved the necklace in her direction. Maybe my head still wasn’t cleared enough. I usually wasn’t this awkward.

“What is it?” She asked as she squinted at it in the dimming light. “It’s a necklace that we found.” Wisdom Kimley turned around as Potley spoke and expertly lit a nearby light pot. “Actually a woman gave it to me.” I corrected him. “Potley couldn’t see her.”
